How Many Utes are Registered in New Zealand as of June?

teenagers on the back of pick up truckCommercial vehicle sales in New Zealand have surpassed the number of passenger cars in the country as of June for the first time, based on Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) data.

Utes, in particular, were among the best-sellers. If you’re looking for the best-priced vehicles, many dealerships have offered bargain deals for new and used models. You should only transact with authorised dealers and choose a company with the biggest selection of your favourite brand.

More Trucks

Light commercial trucks were the second most popular vehicles next to passenger cars. Stats NZ figures show that there were more than 600,000 registered trucks compared to 570,000 in the previous year.

Passenger car registrations still dominated the sector with almost 2.8 million, up by around 50,000 units. However, the ute sector continues to be a growing market especially with the launch of new models this year. Ford and Toyota are among the top favourites, yet other brands like Volkswagen have rebranded some of their models to keep up with the competition.

New Models

The Volkswagen Amarok has been one of the best-selling utes by the German car maker. It phased out the 2WD version in 2017 and replaced it with the 4Motion 4WD system. The company also plans to release updated V6 models this year, including those with a 190kW engine.

Buyers can still choose to drive one with a 165kW engine, along with a limited edition of Amarok Canyon models. Other notable changes on ute models include Toyota’s new SR5 Cruiser and revamped Hilux range, which will make it harder for the Ford Ranger to stay on top of the market.

Whether you plan to buy a new or used car, consider buying from your city’s biggest car dealers. In Auckland, for instance, some of the largest dealerships offer a wide variety of Volkswagen vehicles.
